In life, we often find ourselves repeating the same mundane routine, caught in a rut, feeling that there is no higher purpose for our finite time on earth. However, in my very short lifetime of 17 years, I have come to learn that every human soul has an impact on another, and we all unknowingly contribute to a global butterfly effect. I choose to use my time on earth giving and hopefully leaving a footprint marked with passion, heart, and inspiration.

In addition to being a student at Ken and Jean Dance studio, I also volunteer on average 8 hours a week, student teaching beginner to intermediate classes. I take immense pride in teaching young students, and seeing their devotion for the art of dance flourish because, this institution did the same for me. My job entails much more than fixing one’s turnout and demonstrating patterns, I serve as a role model, friend, and mentor for these young dancers. I demonstrate how with motivation and passion for this refined art form can enable improvement and growth, as a dancer, as well as a young adult. I have spent several years assisting with these classes, and the growth each dancer exhibits is evidence, that my time invested in each dancer is valuable. I feel very privileged in knowing that I had a hand in instilling the qualities of strength, discipline, confidence, and passion in future generations.

As a high school senior who is currently struggling to survive the plague that is senioritis, it is easy to be blinded with the negatives of daily life, and yearn for the future years of freedom, but by spending a portion of my day with young, wide eyed students, it has reminded me how to look again at life with wonder and hope. Daily, I witness the trials and tribulations that each student faces while learning that coveted new step, the conviction, hope, and excitement in each dancer’s eyes, reminds me why I started dancing, and rejuvenates that same passion that I had when I was a novice.

The dream is to one day change the world, although I haven’t made a wide impact yet, I know I have made a deep impact, on each and every student I am privileged to teach. Being called Miss Mal everyday serves as an indication that there is always someone who looks up to me. To them I am their hero, I must never lose hope in myself because, how can I give up on myself, when there are so many people who haven’t given up on me?

I will keep these lessons that I have learned from teaching these dancers in mind and heart, and use them as inspiration on my long journey to one day become an emergency room physician. I will pass these lessons on to many others, and someday create one big beautiful butterfly effect.
