Program Overview

Nomination Period

Western Pennsylvania high school juniors and seniors who demonstrate exemplary character and leadership, dedication to community service, and outstanding academic achievement can be nominated by family, friends, school officials, teachers, and members of the community.  The nomination form is located on the forms page.  All nominations must be received by 11:59 PM on Sunday, February 11, 2024.  Students will be notified of their nominations by mail.

Biography Submission

Students will be notified of their nomination via mail in mid-February.  Nominated students must complete the biography form in order to be considered for the award. The Biography Form is located on the “Forms” page. Biography forms are to be completed by the students, please no parentsCompleted biography forms are due no later than 11:59 PM on Sunday, March 17, 2024.


An independent panel of judges will review all eligible biography forms to select the Outstanding Young Citizen Awardees and Top 10 Gold Medalists.


Students selected and not selected as Outstanding Young Citizen Awardees will be notified via mail the week of April 15, 2024.

Scholarship Opportunities

Scholarship for Diversity in Media

Trib Total Media is proud to announce the Scholarship for Diversity in Media. This scholarship is designed to award exceptionally talented Journalism, Communication, or English Writing students who are culturally, ethnically or racially diverse. Trib Total Media will select one Western Pennsylvania student to receive up to $30,000 in scholarship funds awarded in annual installments.



Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship

The Jim Borden Memorial Scholarship is focused on the development of young reporters, helping them grow as journalists and as people. The scholarship will award one Western Pennsylvania student to receive financial assistance, a paid summer internship, and ultimately, an offer for full-time employment with Trib Total Media.

A full list of all Outstanding Young Citizen Awardees will appear in the Westmoreland and Valley News Dispatch editions of the Tribune-Review as well as the Trib’s weekly and monthly community newspapers on Thursday, April 25 as well as online under the Outstanding Young Citizen Awardees tab.
