Essay

For me volunteering is not about what you do or about how many hours you put in. Volunteering is about the people you help, and what you learn about yourself and the world around you through your volunteer opportunities. The effect you leave on a person just by helping them with a move, with their studies, with an exhibit at a museum and a multitude of other things, is powerful. By being a volunteer I have the power to spread happiness and the power to be living proof that there is good out there in the world. I may be there with my paper to get hours for a club, but I walk away with so much more. The person/people I am helped will walk away with more than they came to me with as well. They could gain knowledge, or time, a shoveled driveway, the situation varies, but the one thing they all have in common is that I did my best to demonstrate that goodness still exists in the world. Volunteering has affected my life by making me stop and think about all that I have. It also helps to reset and fall back to the fundamentals, the war of the ages, good vs bad. Through volunteering I have the chance to spread good no matter what happened in my week. Going forward I hope to continue to volunteer The world can always use more good and I’m lucky and glad that I have the opportunities to spread it through the lives of the people I reach volunteering.
