Volunteerism is an extremely important aspect of my life. Through my school and church, I have had numerous opportunities to work for the public good. I am an altar server and Eucharistic minister at my church, and I often volunteer for events held at my parish. During Lent, I often help at the Saint Agnes/Holy Trinity fish fry. To me it is more than just serving food; it is a chance to get to know and connect with the people in my parish. Oftentimes I have meaningful conversations with the patrons, and if I do not, I at least share a smile. A smile can brighten a person’s day and give them hope; it is a very simple way to embody the goodness in the world. It means a lot to me to be able to get to know my neighbors while also making a positive impact. I also appreciate the opportunity to be a good role model for younger children, and I think the church platform is an effective way to do that. I additionally volunteer at the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. A group of students and I go to the food bank once a month; we pack up the donated food and then pass it out to our neighbors who are food insecure. Volunteering at the food bank has been eye-opening. It is amazing to see how many people will turn down food because they will not use it, when so many other people in the world, that already have so much, will take everything they can just because it is available to them. Many people would think that we are just there to pass out food, but to us volunteers it is an opportunity to show love. Before we begin, we are always told that we are there to spread positivity; our most important job is to make our neighbors feel comfortable and loved. I believe spending time at the food bank has made me more resourceful and appreciative. It is a great feeling to help others, and thus I definitely plan on continuing my service throughout college and after graduation. I intend to join service clubs and organizations in college, and I also plan on continuing my volunteer efforts in my church and community. After graduation, my intention is to use what I have learned to make a positive impact. As a future female biomedical engineer, someday I hope to be a mentor and inspire other young women to pursue their goals in the field of STEM. I believe that service is extremely important, and I will work for the public good as long as I am able. I will dedicate my time to volunteerism because I truly believe everyone can make an impact; it is my duty and honor to put my time to good use as I work toward a better future for the benefit of everyone.
