Volunteerism is extremely important to me because it has shaped me into the person I am today. When it comes to volunteering I look no further than my community. I have done several community service projects, one of which happens to be my Eagle Scout project. For my project I constructed a patio area at Christ Lutheran Church in Millvale. My project included four benches, a fire pit, and a planter box. My Eagle Scout project was one of the hardest projects I’ve ever done because most of the work and planning needed to be completed on my own. Throughout this project I learned how to manage my time, work well with others, and how to plan ahead.
I have also been able to use the skills I leaned to give back to my community in many other ways. One of those ways is by being a junior volunteer fire fighter at Etna station 149. The fire station gives me the opportunity to help others when they need it which I believe is an important aspect of volunteerism. The fire department has allowed me to provide for my community in other ways as well. I recently started to volunteer at Shaler Hampton EMS to serve my community as an EMS provider. Once I graduate high school I hope to continue my education to become a certified paramedic. Helping people has always been important to me and I enjoy helping others.
I hope to stay involved in my community in ways other than through my career, especially through my church. For the past six years I have helped with a Stay at Home Mission Work camp. Through this camp we help people complete tasks around their home that they cannot complete on their own either because of financial or physical difficulties. We have helped with tasks ranging from fixing roofs, cleaning, painting, or do yard work. For the last two years we have worked on demoing a house in Millvale that will eventually be used for low income housing. I get a sense of pride by helping people who cannot help themselves and I feel that we have made a meaning impact in their lives.
Through A. W. Beattie Career Center I have been able to join two volunteer organizations, The Beattie Ambassadors and National Technical Honor Society. As Beattie ambassadors not only do we help give tours around the building to students who are interested in attending AWBCC, we also work on service projects. One of the projects that we work on is a backpack collection for Foster Love. This allows youth who are going to a new foster home the ability to have things that are theirs. Service is an important part of membership in NTHS, every year we build picnic tables for North Park and we complete a service learning project.
Volunteerism is an important part of my life that has been instilled in me since I was young and has contributed to the person I am today.
