Over the past three years, I have been able to form a special connection with my community in multiple ways through different projects and activities. One of the biggest projects is the Harlem Wizards Event, which is hosted and organized by the Interact Club at my school, which I have been the president of for two years. The show allows families in my community to come together and spend a night watching a comedic basketball act that includes teachers and some of our role model high school students. Not only has this project allowed me to give a night of fun to Greensburg, it benefits various local and global causes. Each year, we choose a local cause to give back to, as well as a Rotary International effort. These chosen causes also carry over to our other projects each year. My Interact Club has successfully raised thousands of dollars over the past few years and been able to support Camp Erin, Zachary’s Mission, Shelter Box, End Polio Now, Rotary’s Clean Water Effort, Cards for Veterans, and Teens for Jeans. Some of the other projects that have allowed me to see direct effects on those in my community include the Service Above Self 5K, fire hydrant marker assembly, food bank distributions, food bank sorting events, and building beds for the local Women and Children’s Shelter. My volunteerism has allowed me to see how even the smallest actions can make the biggest differences on the lives of others, and it has been such a rewarding experience to be involved in a club focused around service. I hope to continue volunteering in my hometown and helping at my high school’s Interact events, as well as join Roteract, which is the university level Interact/Rotary. Going forward, I wish to continue making a positive impact on all kinds of causes, near me or on a global scale.
