Volunteering is giving your own time, energy and skills freely. Unlike many things in life there is choice involved in volunteering. When you’re a volunteer, you’ve decided to help on your own accord. No single person can solve all the world’s problems, but as a volunteer you can do your part to make the world better.
When giving back to the community, I participated in Presents for Patients since I was three years old. My family and I annually give presents to nursing home and personal care patients during the holidays. Beginning in 2014 through Allegheny County Camp Cadet, I volunteered to collect and personally deliver sweatshirts to local veterans through Sweats for Vets. At my church, I volunteered at the youth cafeteria as a wait staffer and busser. Recently, I started participating at the Satchels for Caring Foundation; where unique satchels are created for cancer patients,
I consistently participated in donating blood to the Central Blood Bank and last Thanksgiving Day, I distributed food, clothing and survival kits to the homeless. Volunteering through various organizations showed me how I can make a positive impact on those less fortunate and has affected my overall goals in life.
My participation and involvement in all the above has made me a better person. I have greatly matured from these experiences, increased my self confidence, gained wisdom and strengthened my character. They have made me realize that I can be a role model for future generations.
I now have a passion to help others by giving back to the community and helping others succeed. Along with obtaining a career in my field of study, I would love to make a positive impact in the African-American community by educating them on the importance of saving and investing their money. With limited income or no income at for some, this may be difficult to do. However, I believe that in order for our youth to succeed in life they have to be educated on all aspects of life. If I start when they are young, when the opportunity arises and when they have the means to save and invest their money it will make a significant difference in their lives. I hope to prevent the generational cycle of poverty. Giving time back to the community will open new doors for the African-American community and its youth.
