My parents have always instilled in me that volunteering was important. That it was something that I should do throughout my whole life. When I was in eighth grade I needed twelve hours of service to complete my requirement in order to graduate. Once I got the twelve hours I needed, I didn’t stop there. I continued to volunteer my time wherever it was needed. By the end of that school year I had accumulated almost 150 hours of service. I loved the feeling of going in and being needed somewhere. I loved meeting new people and having conversations with them. I just loved the entire aspect of volunteering.
In high school I decided to participate in the Medallion Ball. For the Medallion Ball a candidate needs at least 150 hours of service from freshman year to the end of junior year, that’s 50 hours a year. On top of that my school also required 25 hours of service each year. For the next four years of my high school career I would spend it volunteering. I have gone on three mission trips and spent countless hours at the St. Winifred food pantry. I also worked a lot with Catholic Charities, the Education Partnership, and Center for Theater Arts. To be quite honest waking up early every Saturday was a struggle, but the time that I spent helping others was worth it. I never regretted missing out on social because I had to volunteer. It was almost like volunteering was my job and I have to stay committed to my job.
Next year, I will be going to college at John Carroll University where I have been accepted into the Arrupe Scholars Program. This scholars program is based on the injustices in the world. They focus on not only helping those in need but correcting their injustices either by lobbying or coming up with their own project idea. Every Friday they go out into the streets of Cleveland to help the homeless by giving them food. I am so excited to continue my journey through service on a level that is even more direct. I am studying Political Science in hopes that someday I will be able to correct the injustices that I have seen through my volunteer work. I don’t know exactly what I want to do with the rest of my life but I know that I will continue to volunteer to help others.
