Academic Achievement

Cyberstart National Cyber Scholar – Cyberstart is a national online program that involves exploring cybersecurity through a variety of challenging puzzles involving logic and computer science. I participate as an individual (my school does not participate). I achieved National Cyber Scholar, an award granted to less than 2% of participants. I reached the level of National Cyber Finalist the other two years., National Cyber Scholar – 3 Years
National Center for Women & Information Technology Aspirations in Computing Western Pennsylvania Affiliate Award Winner – This is the highest award offered by the Western PA affiliate of a national organization that aims to recognize students for computing-related achievements., Affiliate Award Winner – 1 Year
Winchester Thurston Merit Scholar – This is my school’s largest merit award. It is given to a single student in each grade as part of an application process involving an essay and interview. It covers 75% of tuition for 4 years., Merit Scholar – 3 Years
AP Scholar – I received a score of 5 in all the AP exams I have taken; Math Kangaroo (an international math competition for students in K-12) – 2nd in Pennsylvania and 17th in the United States., Award Winner – 1 Year
Heinz History Center Civic Season Photo Contest High School Division Winner – I won the high school division of this photo contest designed to engage citizens to get more civically involved., Award Winner – 1 Year

Extracurricular Activities

Sigma Academic Journal – This is my school’s academic journal which is written, edited, peer-reviewed, and produced by students. As an editor-in-chief I help organize workshops on academic writing and article idea generation, encourage students to submit articles, organize the peer review and editing process of all submitted articles to check for quality of work, and LaTeX the articles into a publishable format. I will be presenting on the process of creating the student led journal at The Heart of Teaching Conference in March 2024 at St. Vincent College., Co-Editor-In-Chief – 3 Years
Varsity Cross Country and Track – As a captain I focus on mentoring, encouraging, and celebrating all members of the team regardless of achievement level. In cross country I am a three-time state championship qualifier, a WPIAL top 20 finisher, and top 20 finisher at assorted invitationals. I train year round, including weight training. I also love to learn PA running facts and statistics!, Co-Captain – 3 Years
Quiz Bowl – I am the math expert on my high school’s academic buzzer style competition team where we participate in tournaments at local universities against teams from multiple states. We also participate in KD Quiz, a local quiz show that airs on CBS. We competed in the Small High Schools National Tournament in April 2023 and April 2024, an annual championship event featuring the top small school quiz bowl teams from across the United States., Co-Captain – 3 Years
Girls Who Code – I’ve done 2 programs with this organization whose mission is to close the gender gap in tech. In the first program I explored cryptography algorithms and learned the foundations of cybersecurity using Python. In the second program I explored data science by learning how to read, describe, filter, visualize, & draw conclusions from data using Python libraries. I also attended a statistics & data science program at Carnegie Mellon University where I learned the foundations of data science and basic programming in R., Learner – 2 Years
Euler Circle Introduction to Proofs – An intensive online math class focused on learning proofs through the lens of number theory. This additional math class, taken on top of a full high school course load, took about 20 hrs/week and had extensive weekly proof-based problem sets., Learner – 1 Year

Community Involvement

Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank Volunteer Intern – In 2024 I started an internship with the Food Bank’s childhood nutrition team where I input & analyze data on school breakfast and summer nutrition programs across an eleven county region. Since 2018 I’ve assembled and distributed produce citywide directly to the community, as well as sorted & packed food at the main food bank warehouse, and stocked shelves at the food bank market., Volunteer Intern – 7 Years
Mu Alpha Theta – My school’s math club where we celebrate math and build a community of math enthusiasts. We help prepare members for the American Mathematics Competition, and coach middle school students preparing for math contests. I am proud that both co-presidents are girls, showing our school community strong female leadership in math!, Co-President – 3 Years

Plans

I’m interested in studying cryptography, a field that combines my love of math and my desire to contribute to the world. I’d like to use cryptographic techniques, like end-to-end verifiable voting, to ensure that people trust that elections are secure, free, and fair. I’d also like to develop new cryptographic algorithms to expand voting access by allowing people to safely and securely vote from anywhere, enfranchising more voters to have their voice heard in the democratic process.
